The Double-Screen Dilemma: When Simple Is Not

This summer, I attended a conference with many of my state-level colleagues. These gatherings are always a great time to focus on the issues at hand, chart the future, and—let’s be honest—have some fun together!

One of my friends was tasked with setting up the main room, where the entire group would convene. When I arrived, she was clearly frustrated. She had specifically requested two large screens to be set up at the front so everyone could see the presentations no matter where they sat. Simple, right?

I asked her what the problem was, and she pointed to the front of the room. “I asked for two screens,” she said, exasperated. I looked and, sure enough, there were two screens. The catch? One was set up directly behind the other. Because, of course, everyone knows the best view of a screen is…another screen!

“I even drew a picture!” she lamented.

Isn’t it amazing how even the simplest “You Can’t Make It Up” moments can derail the best-laid plans?

For those of you just kicking off the school year, you’re probably getting daily reminders of how these moments can invade your day—and sometimes your entire week. Are you stewing about something right now that’s potentially going to ruin the weekend?

As much as we’d like to avoid these “You Can’t Make It Up” moments, they’re just part of the deal. The important thing is sharing the load and showing up for each other. That’s the year’s theme in my school district—I Show Up For Kids.

Because let’s face it: our students need us to show up for them, but we also need to show up for each other. So, have you had a “You Can’t Make It Up” moment yet this year? I bet you’ve had something that made you laugh, cry, rage, or just plain shake your head in disbelief!

Send your stories my way so we can share them with the group. You’re not alone, and most likely, we’ve all experienced some version of it—or it’s only a matter of time before we do!

I hope you’ll join the conversation and subscribe to the blog. We all benefit from sharing our experiences, and learning together benefits everyone—it might just help everyone stay in the game!

Key Takeaways: 4 Ways To Recharge This Weekend

  1. Unplug Completely: Take a digital detox, even if it’s just for an hour. Turn off your email notifications, silence your phone, and let yourself fully disconnect. Your mind will thank you. If that sounds too hard, pay attention. Start by setting the timer for 15 minutes and work on increasing your time.
  2. Get Outdoors: Whether it’s a hike, a walk in the park, or just sitting in your backyard, spend some time in nature. Fresh air and a change of scenery can do wonders for your mental clarity. No, seriously – get up and go!
  3. Do Something Just for You: Indulge in a hobby you love or try something new. Whether it’s reading a book, cooking a new recipe, or practicing yoga, focus on something that brings you joy. So, which one are you picking?
  4. Reflect and Set Intentions: Take a quiet moment to reflect on your goals for the year. Set a few intentions—not just for your work but for your well-being. A clear mind will help you lead with purpose. Set a reminder on your phone to read it every morning.

And remember, Labor Day weekend is a gift—don’t miss out on those extra moments to recharge so you can tackle the new year with a full battery!
